Mikumi National Park
Located in southern Tanzania near the town of Morogoro, Mikumi National Park is one of the country’s most accessible wildlife destinations and a key part of the southern safari circuit. Covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers, the park borders the vast Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), creating an important wildlife corridor that supports diverse animal populations.
Landscape & Ecosystems
Mikumi is characterized by open savannah plains reminiscent of the Serengeti, particularly the Mkata Floodplain, which forms the park’s centerpiece. The landscape also includes acacia woodlands, baobab-dotted hills, seasonal wetlands, and miombo forests. The open terrain allows for excellent visibility, making wildlife spotting relatively easy.
Wildlife Highlights
The park hosts a wide range of animals, including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and various antelope species such as eland, kudu, and impala. Lions are frequently seen resting on termite mounds or hunting across the plains, while leopards and hyenas are also present. Mikumi is known for its strong population of hippos, often observed in pools along the main water sources.
Although it does not have rhinos, Mikumi offers rewarding and less-crowded game viewing compared to northern parks.
Birdlife
With over 400 recorded bird species, Mikumi is an excellent destination for birdwatchers. Lilac-breasted rollers, bateleurs, hornbills, and fish eagles are commonly sighted, especially around wetlands and open plains.
