Landscape & Ecosystems
The park’s defining feature is its ecological diversity within a small area. Visitors experience lush groundwater forests fed by underground springs, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, hot springs, and the vast soda lake that expands and contracts with the seasons. The towering Rift Valley escarpment forms a breathtaking backdrop, creating one of Tanzania’s most scenic safari settings.
Wildlife Highlights
Lake Manyara is famously known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior not commonly seen elsewhere in Tanzania. The park also supports large herds of elephants, often seen moving gracefully through the forest. Other commonly sighted wildlife includes buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, warthogs, and various antelope species such as impala and waterbuck.
Primates are another highlight, with troops of baboons frequently seen along the roadside, as well as blue monkeys in the forest canopy. While predators such as leopards and hyenas are present, sightings are less predictable compared to larger parks like the Serengeti.
Birdlife
Lake Manyara is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 400 recorded bird species. The alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos during certain seasons, creating a striking pink hue along the shoreline. Pelicans, storks, cormorants, herons, and numerous migratory species can also be observed, making the park one of Tanzania’s top birdwatching destinations.
Activities
Game drives are the primary activity, offering diverse wildlife viewing within a short distance. The park is also one of the few in Tanzania where visitors can enjoy a treetop canopy walkway, providing a unique perspective of the forest from above. Cultural visits to nearby communities and the town of Mto wa Mbu can also be arranged, adding a cultural dimension to the safari experience.
Best Time to Visit
Lake Manyara can be visited year-round. The dry season (June to October) offers easier wildlife spotting as animals gather near water sources. The wet season (November to May) transforms the park into a lush green paradise and is particularly rewarding for birdwatching.
